These Flowers. in between the doors and memories
hometown photography exhibition]

What Is “Juàncūn”? Why Are We Focusing On Juàncūn?

“Juàncūn”, written in Chinese as 眷村, is a military dependents’ community. Generally speaking, juàncūn is a community in Taiwan built during the late 1950s to 1960s. Juàncūn served as provisional housing for the Republic of China (ROC) soldiers and their dependents who retreated to Taiwan due to Kuomintang’s (KMT) defeat of Chinese Civil War. In the cultural history of Taiwan, juàncūn is not only the most important cultural / political migrated community but also the most important new settlers’ community. Due to the reason that juàncūn’s residents came from various parts of Mainland China, the community indirectly preserved the uniqueness of each province. Juàncūn holds a crucial role in studying Taiwan history and culture. For many people in Taiwan, juàncūn is their real life experience, cultural recognition, and their memories of this land. Preserving juàncūn is very crucial.

The Project [These Flowers. in between the doors and memories hometown photography] (These Flowers.) Started With…

As the government began an aggressive juàncūn demolishing program, these communities began to suffer from problems such as dereliction, abandonment, and relocation. Juàncūn is slowly disappearing from Taiwan cultural map. This consequence has motivated people to reflect on juàncūn’s cultural meaning. This project started with a story from Pingtung, the southernmost county of Taiwan.
The most well-preserved and cultural-valued juàncūn in Pingtung is the Pingtung Donggang Gonghe New-Village. As a matter of fact, this juàncūn is now facing demolition. Joe Fang, a well-known record cover designer in the Mandarin Chinese music industry, who is the third generation of juàncūn residents, has spent his childhood in this very community. Fang is aware of the importance of juàncūn. Seeing his hometown going through the demolishing process, he invited the notable fashion photographer Yi-Liang Su to co-curate this project. Hoping by using their public influence, more people would know the importance of juàncūn culture.

[These Flowers.] Project Outline

1. Online Crowdfunding
 ▪ Combination of juàncūn culture preservation & designing concepts
 ▪ Collaboration with flyingV, a notable crowdfunding platform
 ▪ Funds go to our juàncūn preservation project: “These Flowers. In between the doors and Memories hometown     photography exhibition”

2. The Exhibition
 ▪ Holds at the first juàncūn of Taipei: Shih-Shih Southern Community
 ▪ Dates from September 26 to October 25, 2015.
 ▪ All the exhibits would be destroyed right after the exhibition: to call people’s attention on the value of
preserving juàncūn culture and the irreversibility of culture vanishing

[These Flowers.] Crowdfunding and Project Achievement

1. During the two-month crowdfunding period, more than five hundred people participated, funded for
NTD 684,695 (114.1% of the achievement rate)
2. Facebook fanpage of [These Flowers.] have attracted 6,000 likes within four months.

Juàncūn preservation issue is hard to solve. The issue requires a long-term collaboration between the government and the people. Nowadays, those who focused on the issue are mostly veterans and former juàncūn residents aged above 50s. Expanding the target audience has become another challenge of this project. We’ve tried ways to approach many people as possible: using the recent rising crowdfunding platform flyingV, developing merchandises with several authentic designer brands that are popular among young people. In doing so, we hope to raise more attention to the issue.

Juàncūn culture is not only about history but a shared memory for people in Taiwan. Through this process, we hope to call people’s attention on the possibility and necessity between city development and culture preservation. Starting from the beginning of the project: brainstorming, planning, and executing, the project curator Joe Fang has attracted many volunteers to participate in this meaningful event in ways of interviews, talks, and creative promotion. Included Fang the curator himself, all the staff volunteered in an unsalaried way: photographers, graphic designers, merchandise designers, copywriters, filmmakers, exhibition curators, and promoters. It’s also the first time Shih-Shih Southern Community opened its space to cater for other exhibition (noted: the community compound is not open for any kind of purpose due to its permanent exhibition of juàncūn culture and history). The exhibition of [These Flowers] lasted a month. Fang has influenced and brought the preservation issue to people in the designing industry, music industry, and to the young generation.

This project used an overturning way in calling attention to juàncūn preservation. By using visual media and exhibits, the exhibition tells the story in a contrastive way: from the stories of current hometown (juàncūn) to the stories of disappearing hometown (juàncūn). The exhibits direct people to the issues of existence and non-existence, to invite people to enter the ownership of hometown, and to reflect juàncūn’s meaning to the self and the land.

Our vision is that this project could set a stepping-stone to juàncūn preservation and land-caring issue; further draws the government’s and the military’s attention. We hope to build the bridge between the government and the people and to finally develop juàncūn preservation plans, so that this treasured memory of Taiwan would last. Another online project would follow after [These Flowers]. The new project would be called “Taiwan Juàncūn Online Photography Exhibition.” The project is set to catch young generation’s attention to their hometown. We would invite people who are interested in photography, to take photos of their juàncūn hometown, and upload their works to our website. Having a goal in mind, we hope juàncūn preservation issue could be brought to light through the influence of the young generation, to touch more people, and cater care to every corner of Taiwan.
